ABOUT THE SHOW

Black Séance mingles magic and mixed drinks for an intoxicating, immersive experience that celebrates Black icons. Ushered into a dark, back-alley bar like those you might find in New Orleans, patrons are invited to participate in a transformative ritual that finds Francis, their bartender and amateur magician, channeling some of his heroes. Frederick Douglass, Josephine Baker, and James Baldwin are invoked as Francis investigates his mysterious family history. While encountering the humor and humanity of figures like Eartha Kitt or Redd Foxx through their own words, one never knows who will make an appearance and who will ghost in this visceral examination of generational trauma and triumph.

This show contains mature language and alcohol will be served during the performance. All patrons must show valid ID and be 18+ to attend.

Black Séance premiered with La Jolla Playhouse as part of the 2022 Without Walls Festival. Join us again in 2024 at the Museum of Contemporary Art for a very special remount!

PLEASE NOTE: 2024's remount of Black Seance has been postponed due to extensive damage to our venue. Visit the link below to be the first to know when Black Seance is returning!

FREquently asked questions

How long is the show?

The performance will run approximately 90 minutes without an intermission. However, we encourage you to arrive early as doors will open 30 minutes before the published show time. Audiences are also welcome to stay for another round of drinks after the show.

Are the performers going to interact with me?

While your bartender will periodically speak to you directly, the experience is no more interactive than any other night at your favorite bar. However, we ask that audience members do not interrupt or touch the

performers at any time.

Why is the show 18+?

Because alcohol is served during the performance, all attendees must be 18 or over and show valid identification to enter.
